Messages from PWC Police Department
Messages from PWC Department of Fire & Rescue
As you turn your clocks during daylight savings, Acting Chief Tim Keen, of the Prince William County Fire and Rescue System, would like to remind residents to change the battery in your smoke alarms. “When properly installed and maintained, working smoke alarms save lives and protect against injury and loss due to fire. They play a vital role in one’s home fire escape plan by providing an early warning allowing individuals time to escape a home fire. You double your chances of surviving a home fire with working smoke alarms compared to homes without working smoke alarms”, states Chief Keen.
To keep you and your family safe follow these life-saving smoke alarm tips:
- A closed door may slow the spread of heat and fire.
- Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement, in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area.
- Test smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button. If you cannot reach the button easily, use a broom handle.
- When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
- DO NOT remove the batteries from your smoke alarms to put in other appliances.
- Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years or sooner if they don’t respond when testing:
- For smoke alarms with a non-replaceable battery, replace the entire smoke alarm if it begins chirping.
- For smoke alarms with regular batteries, replace the batteries once a year when you change your clocks (fall back, spring forward), or before if the battery starts to chirp.
- Smoke alarms should be inter-connected, so when one alarm sounds, they all do.
- Keep smoke alarms clean. Vacuum or dust your smoke alarms according to manufacturer’s directions to keep them working properly.
- Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do in the event it sounds. If a smoke alarm sounds during activities that emit large amounts of steam, such as taking a shower or cooking, DO NOT remove or disable the battery. Instead:
- Open a window or door and press the “hush” button,
- Wave a towel at the alarm to clear the air, or
- Move the entire alarm several feet away from the location.
Smoke Alarms for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The deaf and hard of hearing community are in need of special designed smoke alarms. It’s also vital they’re aware of the importance of a proper home fire escape plan. For more information on smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing, contact the Hearing and Loss Association of America at 301-657-2248 or visit

Additional Safety Tips
When changing the batteries in your smoke alarm, change the batteries in your NOAA All Hazard/Weather Radio. Hazardous weather conditions can develop at any time – Be Prepared! Preparation is your best defense!

Trash & Recycling in the County
RECYCLING
Recycling is good for the economy, creates jobs, saves energy, reduces water and air pollution, and conserves landfill space. It is easy and something we can all do everyday!
Recycling is mandatory for residents and businesses in Prince William County. Currently, we recycle 34.6% of our waste.
Private refuse hauling services provide recycling collection as part of their services to residents and businesses. You may hire your own service or work through your Home Owners Association or property management firm. You may also bring your recycling to the Citizens Convenience Center at the Landfill or Balls Ford Compost Facility. Residents may also take recyclables to the
Drop-off Trailers.
Recycling is changing!
Markets for recyclable materials have drastically changed over the past year. Many of the items accepted in the past for recycling are no longer accepted. Please pay particular attention to what you place in your recycling bin. Remember to only recycle materials that are accepted at this time. Other materials placed in the bin may cause the entire load to be rejected. We are no longer accepting glass containers and plastics marked 3 through 7 (such as yogurt, margarine and other wide mouthed plastic containers).
MATERIALS ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING
Plastics bottles and jugs: #1 and #2 containers with necks including soda, water, juice, milk and detergent containers. Rinse out containers. Bottle caps may be replaced after rinsing. No bottles that previously contained hazardous materials (such as oil, flammable materials, chemicals, etc.).
Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans and empty aerosol cans. Empty and rinse out cans.
Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper and paperboard boxes, such as cereal, cookie, cracker and tissue boxes.
Cardboard (flattened and cut down to sizes up to 2 ft. X 2 ft. in size if taking to the drop-off trailers.) Please note: large boxes may be taken to the County Landfill or Balls Ford Road Compost Facility. Do not include cardboard with food residue or plastic liners. Also please discard packing materials such as styrofoam, air pillows and bubble wrap.
MATERIAL NOT ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING
No
glass bottles and jars, window glass, mirrors, light bulbs or ceramics. Glass bottles and jars only can be placed in purple bins located at the landfill and compost facility. See
A to Z Disposal Guide for other options.
No
